Is this coming to the UK. My kind of film: fighting against injustice! If only I believed in laws and lawyers. Well, just in the movies, laws work and justice prevails.

1:30 Future Supreme Court Justice doesn't know the First Amendment. Or the Preamble to the Constitution, since liberty means the same thing. "On the Basis of Sex" is an American movie from 2018 that runs for pretty much exactly 2 hours and was directed by Emmy winner Mimi Leder and written by Daniel Stiepleman and this is his first writing credit altogether, so quite a big project to get started with. First of all, only Germans will probably understand what I mean, but in my opinion the German title "Die Berufung" with its double meaning is better than the English title, also because it gets in the law aspect. But that's just a random side note for now. This is a movie about Ruth Bader Ginsburg. I am hesitant in calling this a biopic because when the film starts, she is already married and a mother and it only spans over slightly more than a decade or so when Ginsburg is a young woman still. The main character is played by Oscar nominee Felicity Jones, her husband is played by Armie Hammer and Justin Theroux has a major supporting part too. The more significant older characters are played by Sam Waterston, always a favorite, and Kathy Bates. I think the latter was criminally underused here. There could have been so much more to her character. Cailee Spaeny plays the protagonist's daughter, i.e. a character that is significantly younger than herself, and it is not the first pretty famous film she is in these days, certainly on the rise. As for Waterston, he turns 80 next year and like I said I am always glad to see him in films these days being a huge fan of him on Law & Order. Of course, I had to think his career-defining turn as Jack McCoy immediately with the law background this film here has. Sadly, after some screen time early on, he disappeared pretty quickly as the film went on and only returned for a final brief moment, in which he is put in his place by the main character.
Now I must say I was fairly critical about this movie early on and not really sure if I should watch it as I expected it to be dominantly feminist propaganda instead of a convincing story. But I was wrong for the most part. The film does justice to Ruth Bader Ginsburg, still in Supreme Court as of 2019, for about 25 years now, and Jones also fits the character visually I think. If you have seen the Oscar-nominated documentary about her, you know a lot already, for example that her husband defeats the odds and wins his battle against testicular cancer. Perhaps, as dramatic as they made this story line look, as quickly they also move forward after using it mostly to show Ginsburg's dedication "double-studying" at the same time basically. There are more situations about her family life that result in occasional comedic delight here, for example her horrible cooking and how we see that her man is just much more capable of leading the household, also less trouble with their daughter when it comes to him. Or the daughter's quote of course about where she got her piggy head from. And there's more. You will recognize these moments when you see them. Another thing I quite liked about this film was that I felt really taken back in time. They did a marvellous job in making this look like a 50s/60s movie visually in terms of costumes, sets etc. It never looked to me like a 2018 movie. The legal focus is on one case in particular, a really interesting one because it focused on men being discriminated and convincing the court that it is the case in order to use a judgment to extend it also to women's rights. There are occasional mentions of racial discrimination too and the question to which extent you can create a parallel between race and gender and it was good the way they included it without going really too much into detail there. Pay attention to RBG saying thanks to a Black bellboy opening the door for her and how the White guys entering after her don't even pay attention. A very minor moment, but an interesting one for sure. One quote by Hammer's character I liked was about how women can also work as firefighters and run towards a burning building if they manage to bring up a child in the sense of the latter being the biggest challenge of them all. But the film is never really in detail about gender equality in the sense of it being put into effect. Just about a case that is an important milestone on the journey. We don't even see how said case is won, we just read the letters on the screen. It is more about the way RBG presented herself in the courtroom going up against these old white men. And of course, you could play a drinking game here for every time there is some kind of discrimination although it is not always 100% clear, for example in the case of a poster in the second half of the film here. Is there anything I can really criticize? Yeah for me personally that we don't see Waterston in the courtroom. But other than that, it is fine, even if you can see from my rating that I was never really blown away in the positive sense by this movie. I am pretty surprised though it did not score more awards recognition. The subject is definitely right up Hollywood's alley, it is pretty baity at times and the precise contents are pure Oscar bait in the times of #metoo. Anyway, the reason may be the subpar reception from critics here. Overall, I would not say it is a great film (for example, I did not like the soundtrack that much) but a good one, at times even really good, and I definitely suggest watching it. By the way, this is the film that your girlfriend will really love you for watching it with her, so, gentlemen, here's your chance for a successful date. I give it a thumbs-up.
